Chapter Eight

As dawn crept into the farmhouse, Viika made breakfast for seven. Mithel got dressed, and he went to the cellar to ask the family to join them.

Viika stood with her bowl of stew in a corner near the fireplace. The farmwife sobbed against Mithel, and the farmer himself had tears in his eyes. “My lord, we thought you were dead and then that... woman appeared.”

Viika laughed.

Mithel smiled. “That woman is my bride, and we will make it official soon enough. Don’t worry, nothing untoward occurred in your bed, Daymoss.”

The farmer chuckled and wiped his eyes. “You could have burned it for all we care. We are so relieved that you are alive, my lord.”

The farmer’s wife sobbed, “They struck you down, covered you completely, we thought you died for us.”

Viika met Mithel’s gaze, and she shrugged as she finished her food before taking the dish to the washing tub for a scrubbing.

The youngest child, the girl of about five or six, was staring at her. Viika smiled. “Good morning. Your food is getting cold.”

“Are you a monster?” The little girl kept a finger near her mouth and bit the nail.

“It depends on who you ask. If you asked the vampires, I think the answer would be yes.”

The little girl’s eyes were wide, and then, she smiled, displaying a missing tooth, front and center. “You are a good monster.”

She chuckled. “Thank you. I do try.”

Mithel made the introductions. “This is Lady Viika, Witch Queen.”

The farmer’s wife backed up and clutched her husband’s hand. She whispered, “Are you here to help us?”

Viika smiled. “I am. I am here to help him, too.” She gestured to Mithel. “His laundry, if nothing else.”

The woman was startled into laughing, and then, there was a bustle of them trying to get Mithel and Viika seated at the table with the family.

It was a strangely warm and friendly moment. Viika had never experienced anything like it with her own family. After a night of terror, they were eager to eat together and enjoy the moment.

Viika knew at that moment that she was going to make sure they had as many breakfasts together as possible.
